Chapter one

The clanking of metal.

The whirring of pneumatic machinery.

Fade up:

Int. Mechanic shop, workshop – DAY

A shiny, fancy-looking spaceship. Like if Bugatti made a mini-van the size of double-decker bus.

A panel of the sleek body has been removed, revealing a mess of oily cables, rusted tubes, and sharp edges. Scuffed boots stick out from under the vehicle – a repair is underway. ANNA (20s, scruffy, determined) rolls out on a board, to switch her wrench for a blowtorch. She’s wearing headphones, and humming along to her music.

Flipping her welding mask down, she rolls back underneath.

Int. Mechanic shop, bathroom – day

A cross-stitched sign, in a cracked frame,

hanging on a dirty wall:

We aim to please.

You aim too, Please.

The sign is hanging over a urinal.

flush!

A figure walks past, towards the sink.

We can’t see their face, but we’ll recognize them later by the orange pants they are drying their hands on – and the tools hanging off their belt.

They leave, we remain, the door sticks open. Through it we see:

the workshop

Anna lifts her welding mask and checks her watch.

ANNA

Shit!

She scrambles to her feet.

Int. REPAIR SHOP-front office

DEL (50s – 60s, close-cropped hair, strong) leans on the counter, with the self-assured nature of someone who owns the place – Which incidentally, she does.

She wears orange pants, has a bunch of tools hanging off her belt, and is mid-debate with an annoyed customer (40s – 50s, sweat stain spreading across the back of his shirt; Thinning greasy hair swept back across his head failing to disguise the bald patch.)

DEL

Look, I get it – honestly I do – but that’s just what it costs. If you’d prefer we can take the new part out again, and put your old one back in, but I would still have to charge you for at least one set of additional labor…

Anna appears from the shop behind Del, vaults over the counter, and continues out.

ANNA

‘Night Del!

DEL

(calling after her)

See you tomorrow sweetie – don’t work too hard!

(back to the customer)

Alright, so how does this sound…?

Ext. Mechanic shop – DAY

Anna collects an old rusty bicycle from the side of the building, jumps on, and rides off.
